In the broadest context, this mission statement encompasses the school’s purpose, history, and ongoing experience. It also helps to describe why SBCS is a worthy target for private donations. SBCS is a brilliant example of genuine, grass-roots democracy, creating a unique collaboration between government, community, and families. It promotes a healthy alliance between parents and teachers with a common focus on the educational, social, and emotional well being of students. It celebrates the arts, not only to enrich lives, but as tools to reach all kinds of learners, in all kinds of subjects. It provides academics in a way that allows students to understand context and meaning, not just memorization of facts. It supports the relationships of students and their families by nurturing non-violent conflict resolution, mediation skills and empathy.
SBCS endeavors to create mission-based fundraising. The school reaches out to its immediate community of families, and to the community-at-large, to bring its mission and the values that it illustrates to the public. “Vision Tours,” which give information about the school’s philosophy and history, as well as testimonials from parents, occur regularly throughout the year. Parents, extended family members, and interested community members are invited to a variety of school/community events – science fair, family art night, informational seminars, and dances, for example – to view how this kind of teacher/family/community collaboration can look. Ultimately, once per year, interested participants in these activities are invited to a fundraising event, where they can express their support for this grass-roots educational reform.
SBCS uses fundraising to supplant public funding for all aspects of services provided by the school. These can include, but are not limited to, Teaching Specialists, Instructional Aides, classroom technology, classroom supplies and materials and to minimize the impact of public school funding shortfalls in other budgeted areas.
If you are interested in joining in with this community of support, or if you would like to come to a Vision Tour or another SBCS community event, please let us know. We welcome all community members to join in the support of this unique and successful example of public school reform.

With BoxTops, contributing to SBCS is fun, engages children, and is very effective. You just look for the BoxTops logo on products your family uses every day (See a complete list here), cut off the BoxTop tag and identifier, and file them away. Every once in a while, bring the collected boxtops clips to school. Each clip means $0.10 to the school, and the amount collected by SBCS grows quite fast.[/symple_column] [symple_column size=»one-half» position=»last» fade_in=»false»]
